Raleigh is the capital of North Carolina, established in 1772 as an outpost for travelers across the state. Landholders such Joel Lane owned large tracts of farmland and operated taverns. The government needed a place to call home, and decided to choose a new place for its business.

The story goes that Joel Lane served the selection committee a drink called Cherry Bounce, a whiskey-based concoction that ferments for weeks. They had such a merry time and later chose Raleigh to be the capital. Profitable choice for Lane, who sold 1,000 acres for the city’s planned use.
